Rationale

Why do we need PAI?

In the past there has been a poor track record of psychometric practice and other psychological assessment (i.e. interviews, reference checks, performance appraisals, assessment centres, etc.).

Labour legislation (Employment Equity Act) requires psychological assessment to be conducted properly within a cross cultural environment.

Effective psychological assessment can make a great contribution to:

  • Enhancing objectivity in assessment for both selection and development purposes in general;
  • Ensuring more effective selection for affirmative action in particular. Given the shortage of resources available to train managers, this process MUST be effective.

The current focus on competencies simply focuses on current capabilities and skills. Thus assessment of competencies alone is insufficient in terms of:

  • Identification of the potential to learn and develop;
  • Reflection of the talent/ capacity required to cope effectively with highly complex situations facing senior managers.

If we as the appropriate professionals do not address this issue soon, others (without the appropriate professional training) may determine these for us.
