WHAT IS THE NEO
The revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R) is the
standard questionnaire measure of the five-factor measure of adult personality.
The NEO PI-R provides a systematic assessment of emotional, interpersonal,
experiential, attitudinal, and motivational styles. The NEO PI-R consists
of 243 items, including validity items, takes approximately 35-45 minutes
to administer, and can be administered to students and adults with a reading
level of 6th grade and above. The NEO PI-R is a concise measure of the 5
major domains of personality, as well as the 6 traits or facets that
define each domain. Taken together, the 5 domains and the 30 facet scales
of the NEO PI-R, including the scales for the Agreeableness and the Conscientiousness
domains, facilitate a comprehensive and detailed assessment of normal adult
personality. The 5 domain scales (often referred to as OCEAN) and their
facet scales are:
-
Openness (Fantasy, aesthetics, feelings, actions, ideas,
values)
-
Conscientiousness (competence, order, dutifulness, achievement-striving,
self-discipline, deliberation)
-
Extroversion (warmth, gregariousness, assertiveness, activity,
excitement-seeking, positive emotions)
-
Agreeableness (trust, straightforwardness, altruism, compliance,
modesty, tender-mindedness)
-
Neuroticism (anxiety, angry hostility, depression, self-consciousness,
impulsiveness, vulnerability to stress)
The NEO PI-R is available in two parallel versions. A Form
S designed for self-reports and a Form R for observer reports. Much international
research and a limited amount of South African research has been published
on this instrument. Reported internal consistency coefficients ranging
from 0.86 - 0.95 for the domain scales and from 0.56 - 0.90 for the facet
scales, have been reported. The NEO PI-R has shown good convergent validity
with other personality inventories, as well as projective techniques. The
NEO PI-TR has been translated into more than 20 languages so far. There
is also a four factor version of the NEO (NEO-4) which excludes the Neuroticism
domain.
